We did it! An amateur carpenter and a 13-year-old young man build three 20-frame insulated bee hives!

And I’m going to walk you through what we did, step by step, including some mistakes so you can learn!

Wood prep
3:01 - Step 1: Cut plywood (If you want to do all the cutting at once, complete Steps 20 and 21 now, too)
6:04 - Step 2: Rip 2x4s

Hive body
7:52 - Step 3: Cut dados in parts H and G
12:36 - Step 4: Notch lower corners of part A
14:35 - Step 5: Notch lower corners of parts C
16:48 - Step 6: Form frame with parts H and G
18:30 - Step 7: Secure part B to H/G dado frame, fill with insulation
20:00 - Step 8: Secure part M to opposite side of H/G frame
20:27 - Step 9: Attach part A to part G [repeat]
22:55 - Step 10: Attach part C to parts H and A [repeat]
23:55 - Step 11: Attach part S to part C [repeat]
24:08 - Step 12: Attach part R at the top of part A [repeat]
26:18 - Step 13: Secure part R to S [repeat]
26:48 - Step 14: Position E on H, sanding if needed
27:41 - Step 15: Center/secure part P on panel A over E and part N on panel A (back)
30:09 - Step 15b: Install board for handles
28:46 - Step 16: Fill one of the ends with insulation, cover with part L [repeat]
30:59 - Step 17: Fill the back with insulation, cover with part K
31:12 - Step 18: Fill the front with insulation, cover with part K
32:46 - Step 19: Drill 3 entrance holes, staple

Lid
6:40 - Step 20: Rip parts W, U, F, and T from 1x4s
34:26 - Step 21: Cut rabbets on ends of each part W
36:03 - Step 22: Drill ventilation holes into U, cover with insect screen
37:22 - Step 23: Secure part U to part W [repeat]
38:10 - Step 24: Attach parts X and Z to the U/W frame
40:12 - Step 25: Secure parts F/T on the inside of parts W/U using spacer

Finish work:
43:28 - (Step 25b: Seal holes as needed)
46:12 - Step 26: Prime (x1 coat) and paint (x2 coats)
44:49 - Step 27: Attach roofing material (OR apply Flex Seal)
41:50 - Step 28: Cut and attach aluminum angles and attach entrance disks
46:49 - Step 28: Seal
46:57 - Step 28: Attach aluminum angles
48:15 - Step 28: Install disc entrances
47:21 - (Step 29: Install handles)
48:20 - (Step 30: Cut divider board, not shown)

48:27 - Transferring caught swarm
