Big Speckled Trout and Snook on Greenbacks at Tampa Oyster Beds

Spring Fishing for Speckled Trout and Snook. The month of March in Tampa Bay Florida is outstanding for flats fishing. My favorite part of the year, spring is when all the fish are coming out of the winter hideouts and are hungry to feed. The snook and trout are prowling the flats searching for food. The big female trout and getting ready spawn. It is very common to catch big gator 20 inch plus speckled trout on the flats during this time of year mixed in with other fish like snook and redfish.

The whitebait/ greenbacks at the skyway bridge and at fort desoto beach pier has been really thick. I've been getting better bait at fort desoto. I have been using the humpback 10 ft net with quarter inch mesh the most. We used the abundant bait to chum mangrove shorelines and oyster beds and got the fish fired up at our 3rd stop for the day. A simple 20 lb flourocarbon leader and 1/0 trident circle hook with a freelined pilchard / greenback is the ticket to get the bite from a trout, snook, or redfish. All fish were safely released as there is a fish closure due to previous red tide.
