Continuing my journey to stay at the oldest hotel in all 50 states of the USA. Tonight I stayed at the Hotel Julien - the Oldest Hotel in the State of Iowa. Located just blocks away from the Mississippi River in the beautiful town of Dubuque, IA. The hotel is named after Julien Dubuque, a French Canadian explorer and founder of the city of Dubuque.

Originally called the Waples House which opened in 1839, much of the original hotel burned to the ground in a devastating fire in 1913 and the current hotel structure was rebuilt in 1915. Notorious mafia leader Al Capone often stayed at this hotel in the 1920s and was rumored to be a part owner during the prohibition era.

The hotel underwent a multi-million dollar renovation between 2007 - 2009 and is a charming and delightful stay with an elegant lobby and variety of rooms.

I also visit Paul's Tavern in Dubuque, a historic bar full of exotic taxidermy and boasts one of the best burgers in America.
