Italy's Mount Etna, Europe's highest and most active volcano, erupted in spectacular fashion late on Thursday, lighting up the night sky with explosions and bright red molten lava.
Ash and lava erupted from the volcano from it's south east crater following an increase in seismic activity.
Pyroclastic flows were observed, as the eruption increased in ferocity, with lava flowing down the slopes of the mountain.
Warnings are in place for the nearby City of Catania, as smoke filled the air, with the potential of grounding flights. Smoke rose to a height of 10 kilometers, drifting west from the volcanos summit.
This is the first eruption recorded at Mount Etna in 2022, which is one of the world's most active volcanos.
