How Obama Bungled Merrick Garland's Nomination And What He Really Should Have Done

Obama's attempt to nominate Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court was an unmitigated disaster. He assumed Garland was so inoffensive that McConnell would look unreasonable if he didn't allow a vote in the Senate in the eyes of the American people. The problem is that nobody was willing to fight for Garland, but they would have fought on behalf of someone else.

Rip it up something: I've been curious since I've seen it repeatedly say it. When you say Obama should have tried nominating a bunch of diverse SCOTUS nominees after McConnell shot down Garland, why do you think it would have worked? Wasn't garland picked because he was the most middle-of-the-road white guy with lots of qualifications. and Obama naively thought the republicans would vote for him. I think he thought that if I put up garland and there is no obvious critique for republicans of garland it's gonna make them look unreasonable. And we're gonna look like the adults in the room. First off, I don't think people pay attention enough to supreme court nominations for that to have happened. And there was no constituency out there for Merrick garland. Like nobody is going into an office who raises money and lobbies the government in any way shape or form that was going to send out an email we got Merrick garland. All the work that you've been supporting for these years has worked. There's nobody out there who does that. there are people out there organizations that are trying to promote African-American women, African-American men, Asian men, Asian women, Latino men, Latino women, trans folks, and gay folks. Some organizations are trying to help marginalized people in some fashion or another move ahead and gain some strength in society. And these organizations would be if you nominated someone who fits into their you know who they advocate for. they're going to go out to their people and say like this is an important nomination. This could be the first you know openly gay supreme court justice for instance. and that could motivate people to vote. If it is knocked down by a republican they won't even give a hearing.
