RESPECT Marriage by Getting the State OUT of It

The House of Representatives recently passed the Respect for Marriage Act to codify same-sex marriage and interracial marriage to pre-empt a potential Supreme Court ruling overturning Obergefell v. Hodges, the case which legalized gay marriage nationwide. There has been a flurry of opposition and support for the measure on both sides of the political spectrum. Both sides exemplify the political and social nature of the institution of marriage, which has retained its character since our nation's inception. Mr. Watson presents a third way: Marriage privatization. He argues that marriage as a structure is valuable for the cultivation of ethical behavior, but government control over marriage complicates its natural effects.
