A dispute between Portugal and Spain coupled with a shortfall in sailing navigation technology left the location of the dividing line in doubt.

Among the most fascinating characters in this story is Lope Martine an African/European mulatto who led the charge and got his ship, the San Marcos back the New World...and for this discovery? The Spanish crown sentenced him to hang...WHAT? Just wait.
