Deck of Cards Day 12.
Today's training focused on the Five Footwork Patterns we base our kumite movement on. Those patterns are:
1. Oi-Ashi - where the lead foot moves first. So front foot first when moving forward, left foot first when moving left and so on.
2. Okuri-Ashi - Shuffle step, where the back foot moves first and generates drive in the direction you are going. There are two versions we use, half shuffle (where the back foot comes up to the front foot and the front foot moves out) and full shuffle, where the back foot drives past the front foot to gain extra forward momentum and a wider gap is able to be bridged.
3. Kosaho - a switch-type movement where the upper body remains essentially unchanged whilst the feet switch position.
4. Sabaki - simply a defensive body movement that takes you off the line of fire to a different angle whilst maintaining your opponent in your crosshairs. It could be seen as similar to the boxing idea of angling off.
5. The Split is where the legs essentially do a split by moving in opposite directions, the front foot taking you off the line of fire and the back foot driving sharply back to create an explosive tendon reflex.

I hope you enjoyed the training.
