Holo Toy Tutorials: Oiling Your Holo

In this Holo Toy Tutorial I show you have to Oil your Holo. There are many ways to Oil Woods. Depending on if you want a slick surface or grippy surface vs lighter or darker. Do a little bit of research on what Oil you should use. In this video I used Tru Oil and Walnut Oil. Finishing your Holo Toy with a Oil is a really good way to strengthen it and make it more durable. It also makes it look a lot clean. Hopefully this tutorial helps you customize you Holo even further.

What is Holo Toy?

Holo Toy is our perfected version of an ancient toy. It is in the Kendama family of skill toys, having features of all of them: Kendama, The Pill, Rolling Pin, Bilboquet, Kugelfang, Pommawonga, Balero, Ajagak, and many more. They are all a variants of the classic cup-and-ball game. Holo has a barrel and chute connected by a string. The barrel is a tube and the chute is the same sized tube but with spiked protrusions on both ends. The same rules apply to Holo as to all Kendama-family toys – catch one part with another. Apply all the advances in modern object manipulation and mix styles from other forms of play. Your imagination is your limitation.

What is Holo made out of?

Every Holo Toy is handmade from wood. So they will all have slightly different textures and some minor wood-grain imperfections. We currently have two wood options. Paulownia and Pine. Paulownia is a very lightweight durable hard wood weighing in at around 70-80 grams total. Pine is a heavier soft wood weighing in at around 145-160 grams total. Each wood has their own qualities. Paulownia seems to be grippier and easier to do kink tricks. Pine wood is a soild weight for smooth control.

Modifying Holo Toy?

Some things you can to do augment Holo’s durability are oiling the wood or coating the wood with an epoxy spray or finisher. If your Holo does get a fracture or crack, use a wood glue to mend the damage. Just remember to take extra good care of your Holo and it will give back to you ten fold. We leave the oiling to our customers so the prices drop and you have more control over the finish and protection.
Play Responsibly!

Play Smart & Safe!

Holo is... well, hollow. So it cannot endure impacts to the extent most Kendama-family toys can. It is therefore your responsibility to play with Holo in a reasonable manner. Play over carpet or grass, versus wood floors and concrete. Refrain from high aerial tosses and avoid strong impacts. They are made to be as durable as possible but hollow tubes are just inherently less strong than solid ones – there is just less material there to absorb the impact.
