Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #16: Chess

Game #16 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is one of the most popular games on earth that I used to play and study a lot in high school, Chess! Invented around the 6th century, Chess is a game where two players command armies to capture the other player's king. Each player's army is made up of the king (who can only move one space in any direction except when castling), the queen (who can move in all 8 directions), two rooks (which can move along horizontal or vertical lines), two bishops (which can move along diagonal lines), two knights (which can move in an L-shape and can jump over other pieces), and eight pawns (which can only move one space forward except on its first move where it can elect to move two spaces, or when capturing in which it moves one space on a forward diagonal).

There are also several special techniques some of the pieces can do, including en passant which is where a pawn can capture an enemy pawn from behind after it moves two spaces on its first move landing next to yours, castling in which the king can move two spaces toward a rook and the rook moves to the other side of the king, and promotion which is where a pawn can become another piece (usually a queen) after it reaches the opposite side of the board. Use these techniques to your advantage and be the first to trap the enemy king in an inescapable position to win! It's worth noting that the king is never actually captured in the game of chess. Rather, checkmating the king and achieving victory is done by putting the enemy's king under attack (in check) and leaving no possible move for escaping that attack.

There are four difficulty levels of CPU opponents to face: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which all must be faced in order (though in this game they're all synonymous with stupid. Seriously, what chess AI brings out their queen on the second turn???). Beat the Impossible CPU to master the game. Also, you can decide which player goes first, and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Chess:

1. The number of people worldwide who play chess is estimated at over 800 million.
2. The "castling" maneuver gets its name from the rook's resemblance to a castle tower.
3. Shogi and chess are derived from an Indian game called Chaturanga. No wonder they seem so similar!
4. If you have the opportunity to see some Human Chess, check it out. It's a live event where people dress as chess pieces and play on a massive board. (Personal addendum: I've seen videos of anime conventions, especially Anime Boston, do this with anime and video game cosplayers as the chess pieces.)

Personal story: I was in a high school chess club, and my dad and I used to play this game all the time. I also owned two iterations of the Chessmaster series of CD-ROM games. That game's AI was WAY harder than this!
