City of Washington Wreck-- color morphing hogfish

City of Washington's a wreck off Key Largo in Florida. Around 25' deep; water temp 83; minimal current.

We noted several medium size hogfish grazing placidly around the wreck, unconcerned with our presence as they sifted sand for some goodies. Pay attention to the color changes from stripped, dark maroon to almost pure white.

This was an iron-hulled passenger steamer that had the misfortune to be moored near the main in Havana Harbor at the inception of the Spanish American War.

Later, converted to a coal carrier, she ran aground on the shallow reef in 1917.
