U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley said on Wednesday that the Donbas region, where Russia has been focusing its efforts on taking during the war with Ukraine, was "not lost yet" as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned the country's objectives in Ukraine were not limited to that specific area.

Milley said it appeared Lavrov's comments that Russia had expanded its war goals were aimed at the Russian population.

"That's not a surprise to any of us or anybody around the globe," Milley said. "I think he's talking to the people in Russia who have been ill-informed throughout."

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also spoke about how the international community was "spurred" into action by Russia's invasion, and a meeting of some 50 countries of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group showed how nations are "rising to the moment."

U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price also spoke during a separate briefing in Washington, D.C., saying that Lavrov's comments reflected the administration's own warnings about Russia's objectives.
