Daunte Wright was stopped by Brooklyn Center (Minneapolis) Police for expired tags. It was subsequently discovered that he had an active warrant for his arrest and an extensive criminal history.

While being placed under arrest by a BLACK Police Officer, Mr. Wright made the horrible decision to resist arrest and attempt to flee custody.

Back up officer Kim Potter deployed what she thought was her taser and advised Wright that she was going to tase him. When Wright continued to resist, Officer Potter pulled the trigger on what she thought was her taser and instead fired a single shot into Daunte Wright.

Mr. Wright subsequently lost his life.

Officer Kim Potter has resigned from the Brooklyn Center (Minneapolis) Police department. Police Chief Tim Gannon has also resigned.

Officer Potter was clearly shaken by her deadly mistake. There is no doubt that she had no idea she had her service weapon out instead of her taser.

That said, this is a completely unacceptable action that will most likely result in criminal prosecution. Mr. Wright should be alive today sitting in a jail cell; not in a morgue.

Was Mr. Wright wrong for what he did? Yes...100%. Did he deserve to die for his stupidity? No. Absolutely not. Did he have any reason to do what he did? No. He was being arrested by a black officer who was treating him with the utmost respect. His life was not in danger and he in should no way should have felt it was. Daunte Wright simply made a horribly poor decision which sadly cost him his life due to an horrible mistake made by a police officer.

Can the mistake Officer Potter made be explained? No. A properly trained officer should 100% be able to discern between their taser and duty weapon even in the HIGHEST stress situations. Sadly, this is not the first time we've seen this happen with a police officer.
