Jesus Paid for Our Healing (part 2)

When I was in the band Silverwind during the 80s, one of the most life-changing stops that we made was during a missionary tour in the war-torn nation of Uganda. The entire country had been devastated by dictator Idi Amin, who had committed mass genocide on his own people.

We held a worship conference in a soccer stadium in Kampala. Each night at the end, I gave a fifteen-minute sermon and then an altar call. Mobs of people came forward for salvation, but they also came forward with desperate needs.

I was encountering raw humanity in crisis, and I simply was not prepared.

One woman brought her baby right up to me. The young child was disfigured and suffering in pain. The mother cried out, “Please heal my baby!”

I prayed for her baby, of course, but on the inside, I recoiled, knowing that I did not have faith for this. I was not equipped. Even though the Lord had healed my wife and daughter earlier that year, I did not know or understand very much about healing. Still, in spite of all of our personal inadequacies, people were getting healed and touched by the Lord in Kampala. God’s presence was strong, and the word was spreading.

People were walking in from other villages and cities hungry for God. All of us on the team were heartbroken to find out that after we left, the stadium continued to fill up for another three nights with people waiting for us to come.

My world was being rocked by all of this. The Lord was challenging me to the depths of my being. It was dawning on me that I needed a major upgrade. “My Jesus” was winning souls but not healing people. I needed the “Bible Jesus,” who also did miracles and healed people.
