Spain wildfires: Ordinary people work alongside firefighters in battle to save their village

Residents of the village of Tabares in Spain's Zamora province worked to extinguish flames that were burning through the fields near their village, joining firefighters already on the ground battling the blaze.

According to the regional government, the wildfire had burned 10,000 hectares and forced authorities to evacuate 14 villages around the county of Tabara.

A Spanish man was also injured while using his excavator to try and dig a trench to create a buffer for the approaching fire when it was consumed by the sea of flames. According to a friend of the farmer's, he received burns and was airlifted to hospital. His condition is not known at this time.

Fires have been burning in multiple parts of Spain, including in Galicia, Catalonia and Castile and Leon and, according to authorities, a firefighter died while fighting the flames in Zamora on Sunday. Local media also reported the death of a farmer in Ferreruela in Zamora province, also on Sunday.
