An elephant calf and its mother were salvaged from a deep pit, where they fell during a storm in the Thai province of Nakhon Nayok.

National Park officials and veterinarians used tranquilizers on the adult animal as a safety measure, as she was agitated over her one-year-old calf’s fruitless attempts to get out of the hole. She then fell in, along with her offspring, doubling the task for the rescuers. Once lifted aside, several people jumped on the mother’s body in order to revive her, while the baby was on its way out of the pit.

The two animals were successfully rescued and seen heading off into the forest of Khao Yai national park.
