Magallanes Street, which was formerly known as Calle Magallanes, was one of the first ones the Spanish colonizers in the city created. It was the hub of commerce in the late 19th century, when the island flourished when its port was reopened to global trade and was named after the Portuguese navigator who found the Philippines, Ferdinand Magellan (also known as Fernando Magallanes). It is now a busy street in the center of downtown Cebu, where the historic Magellan's Cross and Basilica Minore del Santo Niño are located.
