Darkstalkers 3 (PS1) Gameplay Sample

The PS1 wasn't known for it's 2D prowess. In fact, it was often dogged on for it's lack of 2D capabilities, because it was released in the same generation as the Saturn which was a 2D monster, churning out fantastic 2D fighter after 2D fighter, and adding Ram carts to help smooth out the animation in it's 2D fighters.

And, while, I'm sure Darkstalkers 3 pales in comparison to it's Arcade, and Saturn counterparts, probably lacking the fluidity and smoothness due to frames of animation being taken out to get it to run, it is still a very solid 2D offering for the PS1. Definitely one of the better 2D fighters on the system. The controls are responsive, and the game feels smooth, though not having played the arcade version, I am not sure how smooth in comparison, but Capcom made the right sacrifices to get the game to play smoothly, and be very responsive.

It has been a very long time since I have booted this game up, so yep, I am playing on easy, and yep, I was mashing buttons with street fighter commands to figure out how to do the special moves. This is a solid 2D fighter, and even lets you create a custom character....granted, by changing the colors on an existing character.

There aren't as many bells and whistles in this game as there are in say, Alpha 3, but this is a fun offering all around. The only dumb thing is, in checking ebay prices tonight, I saw that a disk-only PS1 DS3 is going for almost as much as a complete Dreamcast import version of the game, so yeah, I'd rather have the DC version were I in the market for this game.

NOTE: I took the liberty of editing out the load times. The actual load times aren't too bad, but make for boring videos.
