A fire broke out in the Gitega Central Prison in Gitega Province in central Burundi on the 7th. After inspecting the scene of the fire, Burundi Vice President Bazong Banza said that the fire killed 38 prisoners and injured 69 others. Zha said 34 of the 69 injured were in serious condition and 35 with minor injuries were being treated in prison, and the death toll from the fire could rise. According to local media reports, the fire broke out around 4 a.m. that day. Burundi's security services said on social media Twitter that the fire was started by a fault in the power supply system.
