Are people around the world moving out of suburbs and urban areas? Deerwood Realty & Friends Ep.29
Article out of Australia says that people are moving out of the big cities and out to the countryside.
Prices surging in regional areas even faster than the big cities
Australia has put 311 billion into their economy, which is thought to be the main driver of housing price increases.
It says that in a normal year, kids in rural areas move to the cities for work and older folks move out..but that hasn’t happened.
Thoughts/Questions
Is this also happening in America?
Why would one escape the suburbs and urban areas:
1. Politicians unaccountable to the people
2. Heavy handed lockdowns and mask mandates. In St. Louis City and County, if I go somewhere, I have to wear a mask. 10 minutes away, in Jefferson County, I don’t.
3. Crime surges in heavily populated areas.
4. Questionable choices by school boards across the country.
5. The nature of work has probably changed forever during the pandemic. As an example, when I was a kid, it used to be a badge of honor to go to work every day. Even if you were sick….you went to work. Now, if you are sick, no one at the office wants anything to do with you. It’s understandable.
What’s also changed is so much more of our work is being done in online. Even 5 years ago, we didn’t have the ability to tell everyone to go home and work from there. I have no idea how much of the economy is no longer dependent on business employees no longer being physically at their jobs.
6. Perceived value. Right now, a 4 bedroom, 2,500 sq ft home in St. Louis City will cost you around 400,000. You can get a similar property in a rural area with acreage for a about the same price. And if you want to get to a baseball game or visit a museum, or even go to fine dining, you are maybe 2 hours away….so you aren’t really missing anything by being out of the city.
7. The article out of Australia wonders if this trend of moving out will continue…what do you think? Is this just a fad or will we see this continue?
