Slick tenant eviction in Vancouver? … Deerwood Realty and Friends…Ep. 34
Intro
Apparently, landlords near Vancouver were evicting tenants through “renovictions”. The idea is that you can evict your tenant when you need to do major repairs to a unit. The new law that goes into effect is supposed to stop the “renoviction” process.
Thoughts/Questions
1. What did you know about the idea of a renoviction before I mentioned it? I had no idea.
2. What happens in the United States if a landlord wants to evict someone so that they can complete repairs in the unit? I’m sure it depends….this is the first I’d heard of it.
3. With a moratorium on evictions in the United States, what will that do to the quality of rental housing going forward? Eviction was the legal process to remove someone who wasn’t paying rent(argue about the rent part). Will desperate landlords consider the renoviction option? Wishing for the unit to be beyond habitable so the tenants have to move out?
4. As a complex society, it just seems like people always find a way…may not be right, may not be ethical, but the individual always finds a way. Renovictions, changing the locks on doors, generally making the unit uninhabitable….it’s not right, it’s bad. But one should marvel at how a society works through this lens of landlord and tenant.
5. Can we be better as human beings? There are all these issues where what seems like the right thing to do has negative consequences. For example, You save up money and you want to provide housing someone. So you buy a property and you get someone to lease it from you. Then the tenant destroys the property. So you’re left with less of an investment with what you started with, and you had to throw someone out of the place they were living.
This does not exclude landlords. A tenant could be in a transition, finds a place to stay, but the landlord is always harassing the tenant, by demanding to enter the unit often, running late on repairs, etc…generally making it so the tenant just doesn’t want to pay rent.
