Fikiswa Gxamesi from Hermanus is passionate about empowering women. A hairstylist by trade and running her own beauty parlour in the beautiful coastal town of Hermanus, Gxamesi shares her experience and skills with young women from the Zwelihle community to also become businesswomen. Providing beauty products and services such as massages, nails and skincare, facials, waxing, makeup and eyelashes to clients, she not only creates job opportunities for women in her community but also empowering them through the sharing of skills. " I love teaching skills and the tricks of the trade to young women to empower them," she said. Gxamesi operates from a small spa in Hermanus and her message for Women's month is simply this: "I'm passing on my work skills to women in my community so that they can learn to run their own businesses. Covid has taught us that we need to bring back humanity, love, sharing, togetherness". As a community developer, she works with other women to teach the younger girls life skills, sewing, beading, knitting etc. Gxamesi also makes the energy-saving Sula insulation cooking bags which she teaches women to make so that they can sell them to support their families. Sula bags are made from recycled materials and do not replace stoves- rather place food ingredients in it and boil it. Sula bags can also keep your cold stuff cold.
