Taiwan conducted its largest-ever disaster preparedness exercise on July 14, 2022, with more than 1,800 personnel taking part in the exercises.

The drills were held amid heightened fears of an attack on the island by Chinese mainland forces, and organisers said they incorporated wartime scenarios similar to what Ukraine has seen since Russia’s invasion, as well as simulated mainland missile attacks on buildings and public transport.

Taiwan also plans to stage island-wide air raid drills on July 25-28.

China could choose to invade some, or all, of Taiwan's outlying islands.

Both the Kinmen and Matsu islands sit just 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) or so off the coast of the mainland, and were once frequently shelled by artillery in the decades after the end of the Chinese civil war.
