Moving Day for Tomatoes and Peppers: 5-13-20

Lori Fiechter here with our "instant" Indiana garden. Yesterday the garden seemed lifeless but today it looks like a real garden--at last! No more plants under quarantine--the shed greenhouse is empty except for the lima beans and cucumbers. It won't be long before we can plant them as well.

It was windy--but that always seems to happen on garden planting day, whether it comes in April or May. This is the latest I ever remember planting the garden. Some of the peppers were nearly rooted to their containers--not easy squeezing them out! The first row of tomatoes were not planted quite deep enough--Stan shoveled out good sized holes for the remaining three rows. I broke off the bottom two stemlets (that's not a word, is it?) of the tomatoes and planted them much deeper. I put loose dirt around the plants, Stan sprinkled 12-12-12 fertilizer around them and then watered them and mounded more dirt. We also planted 3 more rows of sweet corn--and left room for the lima beans.

I forget how long it takes to set out 140 plants! This was around a 5 hour project! I still have flowers to plant, as well as ground cherries and sweet potatoes, but that was enough for today. Calling for rain and thunderstorms after midnight tonight--hoping for a nice shower of rain but not enough wind to break off these new plants!
