Darjeeling
Developed by the British Raj in the 19th century, Darjeeling is now a popular getaway for people keen to get away from the chaos of cities. Pachmarhi
The Britishers set up Pachmarhi in Madhya Pradesh as their summer retreat for the Central Provinces in the mid-19th Century. Till date, it has managed to retain much of that charm and heritage character on account of complete ban on construction in this spot. Interesting thing is that the colonial-era structures have now been converted to beautiful heritage hotels that serve as home away from home for weary travellers.

This beautiful hill station in Maharashtra was also developed by the Britishers to relax in pleasant weather, and bit the heat of the plains. Those visiting this place will witness charming and well-preserved old colonial architecture around the hill station. When here, don’t miss the Matheran Hill Railway which is a UNESCO site that was built in 1907, and is a tourist attraction.

Shimla
Shimla served as the summer capital for British officials during the colonisation period. The Britishers took control of this area in 1815, and before that, it was just an ordinary hamlet. The Britishers then built churches, schools, and bungalows here. Also, the British Government developed the Kalka-Shimla Railway line, which is serving people till date. Plus, the colonial architecture that is spread around the capital of Himachal Pradesh, further making it a sought-after hill station among visitors.

Ooty
Earlier, this place was known by the name Ottakal Mandu, which was later changed from Udhagamandalam to Ootacamund under British rule. People then later again shortened it to Ooty.
This place served as a summer resort to Britishers who visited Ooty to escape the tough heat of the plains. In 1908, the Britishers built Nilgiri Mountain Railway station. Today, this place attracts tons of visitors from far and wide due to its pleasant weather, whereas the best time to visit is from April to June and September to November.

Dehradun
Before the Britishers captured Darjeeling in 1816, Garhwal used to be the ruler of this place. Now, you must be wondering what makes Dehradun famous? Well, Britishers also developed a railway station here by 1899, whereas Forest Research Institute and Khalanga War Memorial have connections with colonial times, which you can check out here.
