Empires, Nations, and War in Nagorno-Karabakh: Interview w/Ronald G Suny | Hollywood & History Ep. 9
Renowned University of Michigan professor and historian Ronald Grigor Suny joins Michael and Armen in this latest episode of Hollywood and History. Dr. Suny talks about what it was like to grow up as an Armenian in Philadelphia in the 1940s and '50s and what first drew him to the field of Soviet Studies. He speaks about his first travel experiences to the USSR during the height of the Cold War, shares his knowledge on how empires and nation-states are formed, and what led him to embark on writing a new history of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. This also serves as the segue into the topic of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. With Azerbaijan currently waging a war to seize the Armenian-populated Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, a self-proclaimed state in the South Caucasus known also by its ancient Armenian name of Artsakh, this discussion acquires immediate relevance in what is going on in the world today.
Dr. Suny is William H. Sewell, Jr. Distinguished University Professor of History at the University of Michigan and Emeritus Professor of Political Science and History at the University of Chicago. He is author of "The Baku Commune: Class and Nationality in the Russian Revolution"; "The Making of the Georgian Nation"; and "Looking Toward Ararat: Armenia in Modern History". His history on the Armenian Genocide, “'They Can Live in the Desert But Nowhere Else,'” appeared in 2015 to critical acclaim.
