Blunt Calls on Justice Department to Help Local Police Departments Prevent Future Tragedies

On the Senate floor today, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt talked about the nationwide protests following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. Blunt acknowledged the importance of the peaceful protests that are taking place and condemned the recent violence directed at law enforcement.

Citing the need for immediate action to help prevent future tragedies, Blunt called on the Department of Justice to use tools like pattern-or-practice reviews and consent decrees to help address any misconduct by law enforcement that violates federal law. If there is evidence of systemic misconduct, DOJ and the local department may enter into a court-enforced consent decree that lays out the steps that need to be taken to address the issues identified. As Blunt noted, Missouri has benefitted from these resources, which produced recommendations to improve policing practices.

Building on a background as a public servant, university president, and teacher, Roy Blunt was elected to the United States Senate in 2010.

Senator Blunt serves as the Chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee and as the Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee. He also serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee; the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee; the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence; and the Senate Rules Committee. He is also the Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education.
