"THE END OF THE LAW"

Romans 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that
they might be saved. Romans 10:2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal
of God, but not according to knowledge. Romans 10:3 For they being ignorant of
God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have
not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. Romans 10:4 For
Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Before us we have the great precept and principle of New Testament biblical
Christianity: That Christ and Christ alone is our righteousness, the fulfiller of the
requirements of the law in our stead, and the only way to God the Father. In Christ
we have a better covenant established on better promises. In Christ we have been
freed from the law and reconciled unto God by the blood of the everlasting
covenant. We have received the atonement, which is defined as “the expiation of
sin made by the obedience and personal sufferings of Christ.” Christ rendered a
perfect obedience to every precept of the law in his earthly life, which is something
we could never do. He always did those things that pleased the Father, a pleasing
which we are not only incapable of, but were unwilling to do in our natural state.
Christ is our Passover lamb, without spot and blemish, who as our substitute bore
our sins and became sin for us. The Father passes over our sins based upon the
merits of his only begotten Son. He who knew no sin bore our curse on the cross
that we might be free from sin and approach God the Father by Our Saviour who
declared himself to be the way, the truth, and the life. Christ has taken the
handwriting of ordinances (contained in the law) out of the way and nailed it to his
cross. We no longer live to please ourselves, but out of love to Christ for the great
love wherewith he loved us, we seek to please him. We fail miserably of our desire
to please him but have peace with God because Christ has pleased the Father in our
stead. Our frail efforts to do right and be right come not of ourselves, but from
Christ who works in us to will and do of his good pleasure. It has been God’s
pleasure to graft us into Christ who is the true vine, making us holy and acceptable
in his sight. We are accepted in God’s beloved Son Jesus Christ, as the Father has
accepted the work of Christ in our stead. Ephesians 1:5 “Having predestinated us
unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good
pleasure of his will, Ephesians 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his grace,
wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.” We are ”kindly received” by
the Father in the person of Christ.
If we have experienced these things and know them for ourselves by the revelation
of God and the engrafted word, we have righteousness, joy, and peace in the Holy
Ghost. We who were sometimes far off from God are now made night by the blood
of Christ.
Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are
made nigh by the blood of Christ. Ephesians 2:14 For he is our peace, who hath
made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
Ephesians 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of
commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one
new man, so making peace; Ephesians 2:16 And that he might reconcile both
unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:”
Christ abolished the law of commandments which was against us, took it out of
the way, and nailed it to his cross. Romans 8:2 “For the law of the Spirit of life
in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” Christ has
“abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the
gospel.” (2 Timothy 1:10) “Abolished” means to repeal, abrogate, or destroy.
Thus, Christ in fulfilling the law has destroyed its power over the elect of God.
They are not under the law but under grace. Galatians 2:16 “Knowing that a man
is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we
have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ,
and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be
justified.”
Those of us who know these things and are persuaded of them find in our old man
and corrupt nature the strong tendency to still look to our own performances, or,
what we have done, instead of what Christ has done. Our selfish sinful nature is so
strong that we look to what we have done instead of what Christ has done, and this,
at the last, can only cause us despair. If we closely examine any perceived good
work or obedience closely, we will find that it is tainted by sin. But still, we think
within ourselves of some perceived obedience to God and have the pronounced
proclivity to look at that instead of the Living God. We look at unbelievers and, in
our hearts, think ourselves to be better than them. But we are no better than them.
The only difference between us and them is that God by his grace has given us
faith to believe that Christ did indeed die for our sins, that he was crucified, buried
and on the third day rose again. 1 Corinthians 4:7 "For who maketh thee to differ
from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst

receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?" It is the work of
the Lord Jesus Christ alone to separate the chaff and the wheat, the precious from
the vile, and the sheep from the goats. We have not separated ourselves unto God.
We have not chosen Him but He has chosen us. As we live by faith, so all boasting
is excluded by the law of faith. The law of faith is what we are to live by. We do
not live by our works, and our goodness extends not unto God. Psalm 16:2 "O my
soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth
not to thee; Psalm 16:3 But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the
excellent, in whom is all my delight." We bring nothing to God but our sin. But
the outworking of union with Christ results in a love to the saints of God, those that
delight in Christ and His word. We are to live by the rule of faith, not the rule of
the law. Romans 14:22 "Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is
he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. Romans 14:23
And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for
whatsoever is not of faith is sin." If your conscience condemns you in something,
ye ought not to do it. What you can do in faith, do it well and without
condemnation. 1 Corinthians 10:31 "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or
whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 6:20 "For ye are
bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which
are God's." The significance and importance of your life comes not from any
innate talent, goodness, ability, or performance you do. The value of your life
comes from the value God has placed on it, and that value or price he has put upon
it is the body and blood of his only begotten Son. Therefore, every small matter of
life, every thought of the heart, every action of the body derives its importance and
value from the sacrifice of Christ and not anything intrinsic within us. Our
significance and value is wrapped up and hidden in Christ alone. Apart from him
we can do nothing, and truly are nothing.
Look at yourselves. What are you and what is your life? Ye are worth more than
many sparrows. Matthew 10:28 “And fear not them which kill the body, but are
not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul
and body in hell. Matthew 10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and
one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. Matthew 10:30
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Matthew 10:31 Fear ye not
therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” The value of Christ is
inestimable.
INESTIMABLE, adjective
1. That cannot be estimated or computed; as an inestimable sum of money.
2. Too valuable or excellent to be rated; being above all price.
It is impossible to place too high of a value on our Saviour. Philippians 2:8 “And
being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto
death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:9 Wherefore God also hath
highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Philippians 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in
heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; Philippians 2:11 And
that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God
the Father." The salvation and work of Christ is everlasting, endless, without
beginning and without end. It is perfect, full, and complete. We can add nothing to
it nor take anything from it. It stands proclaimed in the midst of this sin filled
world that Christ and Christ alone has merit or value, and it is for the great love
wherewith he loved us that he laid down his life in our stead. Christ died for the
ungodly, that we might come to him, trust him, love him, and serve him. Luke
1:69 “And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant
David; Luke 1:70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have
been since the world began: Luke 1:71 That we should be saved from our
enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; Luke 1:72 To perform the mercy
promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; Luke 1:73 The
oath which he sware to our father Abraham, Luke 1:74 That he would grant
unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him
without fear, Luke 1:75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of
our life.” God has granted deliverance unto us by His Son Jesus Christ. It is a
perfect and complete deliverance from the law and the bondage wherein we were
held. We cease from our works, and he does his works in us. We live in love
because “God is love.” We walk in peace because Christ is our peace. We have
hope because he is our hope. We have life because Christ is our life. We have
strength because he is our strength. We live because He ever lives to intercede for
all them that come unto God by faith. He has given us power to become the sons of
God, and as such, we believe on his name. We live in his light, walk in his light,
and his blood cleanseth from all sin. We are not saved by what we have done, but
what he has done. In this we rest, and in this we wait on Him who is able to keep
us from falling, and present us faultless before the throne of God with exceeding
joy. He is our Anchor, steadfast and sure, our Rock that cannot be moved, and we
will be with him forever.
