Jupiter is the fifth planet to the Sun and the largest planet in the solar system. As of 2019, Jupiter has 79 known moons.
Jupiter is a giant planet, one thousandth the mass of the Sun, but two and a half times as massive as the rest of the solar system combined. Jupiter's main composition is hydrogen, but helium, which is only a tenth of a molecule, makes up a quarter of its mass. It may have a rocky core and heavy elements, but no solid surface that can be clearly defined. Jupiter has the appearance of an oblate sphere due to its rapid rotation. The atmosphere is divided into zones and bands depending on latitude, with turbulence and storms at each other's boundaries. The most striking example is the Great Red Spot, a massive storm that has not stopped since it was first seen by telescopes in the 17th century. Jupiter is also surrounded by faint planetary rings and a powerful magnetosphere, including four galilean moons discovered in 1610 and 79 as of December 2019. Ganymede is the largest, with a diameter larger than mercury of the planets.
The early flybys were two each of the Pioneer and Voyager missions, followed by Galileo and Juno, which circled Jupiter, and New Horizons, which used Jupiter's gravity to accelerate to Pluto. There will still be plenty of space missions to explore Jupiter's system.
