Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #11: Dominoes

Game #11 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is a tile-based game first dating back to 13th-century China with modern versions first appearing in 18th-century Italy, Dominoes! And no, you don't play the game by lining them up vertically into a shape and knocking them down. The way you play the actual game is by starting with deciding turn order by whoever draws the highest domino. That player will then start by laying a domino on the table, and then players take turns laying down a domino on the table with one of the sides matching the end of line in play (for example, if the first player plays a 4-6 domino, the next player can attach any domino with a 4 on it to one end, or any domino with a 6 on it to the other end). Doubles (i.e. 5-5, 1-1, etc.) act as "spinners", creating additional lines for players to play off of. If a player can't play due to not having any dominoes with either end that matches the end of any active line, they must draw from the boneyard until they can play. If the boneyard is empty and a player can't play, they must pass their turn. The objective is to be the first to play all of your dominoes.

There are no difficulty levels for the CPU players, but there are two different scoring rules to master: Simple Rules and Five-Up. In Simple Rules, playing all of your dominoes will earn you a score equal to the sum of all of the pips on your opponents' dominoes. In Five-Up, any time you play a domino that makes the sum of the end points of all active lines equal a multiple of 5, you will get that multiple of 5 added to your score. Either way, the game continues with multiple rounds until one player reaches a predetermined score (in this case you can play to either 35 or 61), at which point the player with the highest score wins. Win with both scoring rules to master the game. Also, there's a house rule allowing you to change the rules for having to draw dominoes from the boneyard to make it so you only draw one tile and then pass your turn if you still can't play. Also, each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Dominoes:

1. "Domino" refers to a style of masquerade mask.
2. Dominoes, backgammon, playing cards, and chess are considered the "big four" of parlor games.
3. The game of dominoes was invented in Italy.
4. There is another version of dominoes played in China called pai gow.

Personal story: There is also another variation called Mexican Train that has become a staple at many of my family gatherings.
