How it started: Local report from Colombo amid Sri Lankan turmoil

As unrest erupted in Sri Lanka amid a severe economic crisis, with thousands of protesters occupying the presidential residence, party leaders have demanded that both the head of state and the government step down. Riot police used tear gas against demonstrators in clashes across the capital. At least 42 people were reportedly injured, including at least two security officers.
