Cold but fun day being the lead cow
How to be a Ranch Hand
Cows couldn’t figure out how to get to the hay. Boss wanted me to get a Japanese quarter horse and move em over to it.
I thought I’d be funner to find Miss Lady Bug (milk cow), give her a few treats, and see if she’d follow me. Plan worked perfectly, and probably took a lot less longer to. Soon everybody was walking single file behind me.
Hard to see, but Winston sometimes throws a temper tantrum if he sees me and can come with, lol.

How a professional cowboy moves cattle
How to be a Ranch Hand
Yes, the cows wonder what’s wrong with me…
Yes, my horse knows I’m special, lol
6
Walking Winston
How to be a Ranch Hand
Sir Winston’s my little mustang. Sometimes he gets bothered by vehicles. So, I decided to feed horses and take him a long with me.

Checking on a heifer having calving problems (part 2)
How to be a Ranch Hand
I named him Lucky!
Just for reference, my first video riding out to check her was taken around 7 (who knows how long she’d be in labor for). And Lucky wasn’t born till after 11!
He was super lucky indeed, but he has a very good mama and is still doing good. The thumbnail picture was taken of them the next morning.
I just wanted to keep them in there close to my trailer so I could keep an eye on em for a while. I had both my arms in his mama moving his back feet around as carefully as I could, but I coulda cut her with his hoofs or tore something, so better safe than sorry.
Maybe someday I’ll do a video explaining beech position and some of the other calving difficulties / what to do about em.
Checking a heifer having problems calving (part 1)
How to be a Ranch Hand
Me, Paleface, and hornet were out taking a ride to check on a heifer having some calving problems. We had some little helpers following us most of the way, lol (part 1)

My friend Gus Gus, the field mouse
How to be a Ranch Hand
This is Gus Gus the field mouse. I first saw him about a month ago (December). I think he hears my ATV come by his pump house when I feed the cattle their grain and comes up for a mid hibernation snack (his eyes always look like their closed to me). I usually see him when it gets a little warmer. But I always leave him a little treat in the same spot.

Just a beautiful day moving cattle
How to be a Ranch Hand
Moving Sampson (the lead steer), and his little buddy (lead steer in training), to where the other cattle are today.
I like to sing or hum while I’m working. Seems to make my moves a lot calmer.

The mouse (part 1)
How to be a Ranch Hand
Was ranch sitting, when we discovered a mouse under one of the beds…

First ride on Sir Winston
How to be a Ranch Hand
My bestest little horse in the whole world, Sir Winston, got to go for a ride today. He did really good. Finally warmed up enough here in Antarctica that the footing wasn’t to bad, lol

Branding calves
How to be a Ranch Hand
Good ground crew + good guys in the saddle = good time at a branding. It was a long day, but it was fun. Luckily the rain didn’t hit, passed right by us.

Baby trout foot spa
How to be a Ranch Hand
I was working on a water gap today and I kept feeling something around my feet.
I looked down and these little trout were loving my nasty feet, lol.
Thought it was kinda cool.

Helping at the neighbor’s longhorn branding
How to be a Ranch Hand
We got invited to the neighbor’s branding. They raise longhorns which is pretty cool.

Being in the drag can be a drag
How to be a Ranch Hand
Me and pepper just hanging out in the drag. It was still pretty early out, so not to warm yet. And we were going up a road. So it was a good day. We eventually got where we were going.
He will bite cows, if they don’t listen to his ear pinning. I always give lots of praise when he does, lol.
