EFFECTUAL CALLING

KJV Matthew 4:18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
KJV Matthew 4:19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
KJV Matthew 4:20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. KJV Matthew 4:21 And going on from
thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with
Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
KJV Matthew 4:22 And they immediately left the ship and their father and followed him.
In these verses from the KJV we find the simple recounting of Christ calling two sets of brothers to be his followers. Jesus simply called to them, and they immediately left their occupation and their kinfolk. We have no information as to whether or not these men had any knowledge at all of Jesus up to this point. What we can be certain of is that the very person of Jesus and the power of his words was sufficient to cause these men to leave the lives they had known and willingly
forsake their means of subsistence. These men had been immersed in their labors up to this time.
We have no reason to think that they were not Sabbath keeping observant Israelites who were making an honest living through their labors. Their calling by Christ and their direct obedience to that call is a physical picture of a spiritual truth. When the word of God is sent forth in power to those whom God chooses, that call imparts to them a desire and power to respond. I will demonstrate this more fully shortly. It may suffice for the moment to point out that there was no resistance, no hesitation, and no objections made by the men who were called. Further Christ
spoke but once to them and there was no need on His part to speak twice. Thus we see the supernatural and spiritual nature of the spoken word of God coming forth and doing God’s will immediately. There is no hesitation and no obstruction that hinders this word. As it is written: KJV Luke 4:32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. God’s word does the work of God. God’s word comes in power at the appointed time to those whom He has chosen to be the objects of His love and grace. These men saw, heard and perceived in
their hearts that following Christ was more important than anything else. The Lord Himself takes claim and glory for the actions of those that come to Him because He caused them to come to Him. KJV Proverbs 20:12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them. Those that hear the word of God, believe it and receive are effectually called. The word works upon and within them to do God’s good pleasure. If it were God’s good pleasure to save all men, all would be saved. If it were God’s intention and desire that every single soul that ever lived should be saved, every soul would be quickened
and made alive in Christ. But it is obvious that many may be called but few are chosen. The word is to be preached indiscriminately to all creatures and men, but the power of the word to make men alive from spiritual death is only manifested in those whom the Lord has predestinated unto salvation. Those that hear the word and do not keep the word are tares and not wheat. They are goats and not sheep. They are vessels of wrath fitted for destruction, and no human agency, pleading, imploring or power can change it. Men are to be preached to indiscriminately with the word. Debates, arguments, logic, and reason used by ministers are of
no avail in comparison to the word of God when it is put forth without admixture. The efficacy of the word of God alone is demonstrated in our text for this day. Jesus did not engage in carefully couched words to compel these sinners to follow Him: He simply spoke the word and it was so. Divine revelation and compulsion of sinners is God’s method of bringing His chosen ones onto Himself. The quickening influence of the Holy Spirit comes into men through theword and convinces them of their sin, judgment, and the righteousness of God. Jesus is shown to the unsaved elect to be alive by many infallible inward spiritual proofs that cannot be refuted.
The Christian has the evidence within himself that Christ is risen from the dead by virtue of his own spiritual resurrection accomplished by the will of God in manifesting the risen Christ to him by the power of the Spirit working by the word of God. This is one reason for being very careful as a preacher to not mix the word of God with fleshly arguments and carnal reasonings that have no power. This is the reason we reject all modern translations in English and cleave to the King’s
English. “Where the word of a king is there is power, and who may say unto Him, What doest thou.” Ecclesiastes 8:4. The word of God is very pure and therefore his servants love it. There is no knowledge, might, counsel or strength against the word of the Lord. In correcting or revising the word of God men reproach God Himself as subject to error and set themselves up as the final arbiters in matters of faith, practice, and doctrine. The humble contrite soul that trembles at the word of God alone has right standing in heaven and finds the approval of Christ. The word of God is the agency whereby the Lord brings life or death. No man can stay the hand of God.
When the set time is come God favors his chosen ones with a deep conviction of their own sins, sorrow for their sins, fear of damnation and hell, and the certain knowledge that their sins have been covered by the blood of Jesus.
For those that obstinately make lies their refuge and cling to cunningly devised fables of the great power of the will of men we submit the following passage of Holy Writ.
KJV John 11:43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
KJV John 11:44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. Here we see the dead man Lazarus is called by the words out of Jesus’s mouth to rise from the dead and come out of his grave. The irresistible power of God makes the dead man alive to hear the words of Christ and have the power to come out of death into a restored life. This is the ultimate picture
in the Bible of a sinner dead in trespasses and sins being quickened by the word of God. A dead man can’t hear. A dead man can’t think or reason. A dead man is powerless. And only Christ can make a dead man alive again. This real-life incident condemns bluntly all those that think they had some part in their salvation. It is God that kills and makes alive, it is He that raises the dead and causes the beggar to inherit the throne of glory. KJV Proverbs 21:30 There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD. KJV Proverbs 19:21 There are many
devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand. The word COUNSEL here is defined as:
7. In a scriptural sense, purpose; design; will; decree. Thus the Lord’s will, design, purpose and decree overrules the purpose, will, design and decree of men. If it were not so, God would not be God, nor could we call Him Lord.
Christ made sure to relate in a parabolic form the fact that divine compulsion is the means whereby he brings His own to the marriage supper of the Lamb. It is evidence of a darkened heart and carnal mind that men will not receive this precious and wonderful truth of the mighty power of God that has been exhibited in all ages and all places.
Luke 14:16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: KJV
Luke 14:17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
KJV Luke 14:18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The
first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
KJV Luke 14:19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to
prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
KJV Luke 14:20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. KJV Luke 14:21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord
these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
KJV Luke 14:22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. KJV Luke 14:23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
