The Real Significance of the Push for DC as the 51st State

So House Democrats voted to make DC the 51st state in an obvious ploy to gain an extra 2 Senate seats... However, many people seem to be missing the real point of this story and that is that politicians are beginning to openly disregard all of America's basic federal institutions in the interest of achieving their political objectives. This would support my assertions from the last couple years about their being no consensus in favor of the US federal government's existence in its current form, and the inevitability of its collapse once challenged by any major crisis.
