Ukraine has said its forces may be forced to withdraw from their last stronghold in the Luhansk region to avoid capture, as Russian troops advance in the country's east.

The governor of Luhansk explained that Russian soldiers have entered Severodonetsk, the largest city in Donbass, still under Ukrainian control.

1. Russia has taken control of the town of Severodonetsk in the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of Russia’s Chechen Republic, said on Saturday.

"Severodonetsk is under our complete control. The city has been liberated. The residents can rest easy. They are no longer in jeopardy from now on," Kadyrov wrote on his Telegram channel.

According to Kadyrov, it was expected to take control of the town in a week’s time, but the goal was achieved more quickly.

"The initial plan was to liberate Severodonetsk in a week, but today I made corrections and set the task of taking control of the town in three days. As a result, our soldiers have done it even more quickly - in three hours," Kadyrov added.

2. EU proposes withdrawing Druzhba oil pipeline from sanctions

The EU proposed to temporarily exclude the Druzhba oil pipeline from the draft embargo on the import of Russian oil. The lockdown can be postponed until June or December 2024. On Sunday, May 29, reports Bloomberg.

It is noted that the pipeline is the main source of crude oil imports to Hungary. That is why this country has blocked a new package of restrictions against the Russian Federation.

“The proposal will give Hungary, which opposed the deal, more time to find a technical solution that will meet its energy needs,” sources said.

However, they added that the new draft embargo would also take into account “the concerns of other landlocked countries, including Slovakia and the Czech Republic”
