PREYINGHAWK REPORT RUTH SARNOFF: THESE DOCUMENTS PROVE CLIMATE CHANGE IS HAPPENING!

Ruth Sarnoff is a living legend in my opinion. A gold mine. A treasure. Anyone with half a brain can listen to her and see it. If you really, really listen to her words, you will know. You will get it. At first, I couldn’t quite track "what" she was saying because her subject matter was in a completely different area than I have follow closely.... e.g. climate change, dilapidated portables or the danger of fluorescent lights.

But as I followed her meeting after meeting, I started to picture in my mind what she was "really" trying to say even though the words were very different from mine for the exact same thing (e.g. "containers" to Ruth are "portables" in my vernacular). To give an example, when Ruth Sarnoff talks about the danger to children who are "placed in containers with big fans put inside them with the them" is another way to say “there are dangers to children who are sent to school each day in a portable classroom with leaky air conditioning units placed in them like we see in many Chico schools.

At this meeting Ruth used the Budget item on the agenda to raise the issue of climate change and weaather documents she has worked on for over a year that show a major shift in the erth's orbit. And she mentions Hyperion as an example of how rising ocean levels has impacted Huntington Beach. I had to admit I didn't know anything about Huntington Beach or what Hyperion was. And of course when I got home that night I did some research. Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant was built in 1894 and has been in big trouble lately. July, 2021 plant failures led to the plant being flooded and was forced to release 17M gallons of UNTREATED wastewter into the ocean. Residents weren't notified for 24 hours and kids had been playing in that bacteria-laden water. And in the middle of ALL OF IT is the PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT. So it is all related.

So I encourage everyone to take a minute and listen to Ruth or to other seniors in your universe! They have a wealth of knowledge and experience that we need to capture for our memories and the future generations. Because whatever they have to say, it is never irrelevant or inconsequential. At this age, they don't need to or want to spend time “bullshitting”. They also don't need to hear themselves talk! And when they DO speak, it is important to just listen. That's it. Just listen.

I started listening to Ruth Sarnoff at a City Council meeting a couple years ago. She was interesting and she knew how to “work” a council and work the opportunity to give her "public comment" to maximize the time she can use to get her viewpoint and statement on the record. It’s like watching a “master class” in how to stand firm even when the mayor is shouting “point of order, point of order, Ruth stay on topic”. FASCINATING. She does that in this meeting here the agenda item was the city budget. And she wants to give her important document and statement on the weather. Which she feels is at a perilous point with no way to go back because of the permanent damage. In her universe this is mission critical, priority #1. Which I can understand of course. I may have a different “mission critical” urgent issue like the poisoning of our kids with toxic pharmaceuticals but I absolutely know if something is mission critical, you do all you can to get the word out.

At this meeting Ruth presents her weather maps. I’ve watched her work on these weather maps for a few months, so I know her logic in presenting them in this way. She wanted to find an easy way to SHOW the changes in the weather pattern over a long period of time so she came up with a great way to do it, nothing high tech or complicated.

On the last page of the newspaper there’s the weather page, with a picture of the U.S. and shades of color that we all know (red is hot, blue is cold). The format is the same every day, the cities listed are always the same, and the paper never skips a day reporting the weather.

She cuts out the map and has a process for marking and counting the “frozen cities” (those <32 degrees) and the cities with “extreme heat” (>90 degrees). She makes note of the weather fronts going across the country. She did this every day, and while it took her almost a year to compile 4 ½ years of reports she completed it! And then put them all in a binder.

Which is what she brought to the Chico City Council meeting on this night. She feels its important to have a “document” in the public record because electronic files always seem to disappear today in the era of digital recordkeeping.

Especially in the city of Chico who is notorious for missing, lost, destroyed documents. Therefore, she clearly and slowly states at the beginning, “this is a document. A document that documents the weather.” She doesn’t just say that without a reason although ignorant people think she rambles. Nope. If you are an interested observer, you would see that! WAY TO GO RUTH SARNOFF! CONGRATULATIONS ON FINISHING THE WEATHER DOCUMENT, YOUR LABOROF LOVE GOAL! You inspire me.
