Sonic Triple Trouble No-Death Playthrough (Sonic Adventure DX - GameCube)
This is a capture of me playing through Sonic Triple Trouble for the Sega Game Gear via Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut for the GameCube. I'm playing the game in progressive scan mode using an actual GameCube (not the Wii). I'm using Sonic and collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds in this playthrough.
Here’s the fourth mainline Sonic game for the Game Gear. I first played this game when it was released on the 3DS Virtual Console back in 2012, but I originally beat it without collecting the Chaos Emeralds since I didn’t use any maps. Oddly enough, Sega released this Sonic Triple Trouble first on the 3DS and then followed up Sonic 1, 2 and Blast over a year later, so this was the first Game Gear Sonic game that I ever beat.
I hadn’t played this game in 10 years, so when I finally got around to revisiting it for recording purposes, everything felt new again. Since my GameCube captures come through sharper than my 3DS recordings, I decided to play through this game using Sonic Adventure DX, just like I did with Sonic Chaos.
Sonic Triple Trouble is by far the best Sonic game on the Game Gear, and it may very well be one of the best Game Gear games overall (though I have a more limited experience with the Game Gear compared to the Game Boy). The stages are much longer than the ones in Sonic Chaos and the level design is nothing short of excellent. I particularly enjoy the winter zone, which shoots you through the level at high speeds using zig zagging half pipes and air currents.
This time around the Chaos Emeralds are obtained from bonus stages accessed by Chaos Emerald monitors hidden near the end of the main stages. Luckily, it only take 50 rings to active a monitor instead of the 100 required in Sonic Chaos. Also, when Sonic or Tails get hit in this game, you only drop 30 rings at a time, which is nice.
Triple Trouble isn’t all that difficult, but the side-scrolling bonus stages can be a bit challenging. However, Tails’ flight ability helps to ease the frustrating parts, and since he can now collect the Chaos Emeralds, he is arguably the better playable character. I used Sonic once again though, for the sake of consistency.
Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the GameCube's component cables at 60 frames per second.
