Performance notes:

In a well-known story, the words of “America the Beautiful” were authored by English professor, Katherine Lee Bates during a cross-country train trip in the summer of 1893. She had seen America’s “alabaster cities,” “amber fields of grain,” and “purple mountain majesty” and set to writing a poem. It was first published two years after and then matched to Samuel Ward’s music in 1910. This arrangement, originally for band, should be played slowly and with reverence. The opening should be rather marcato, but during the melodic sections later in the piece these accents should be played with care. They indicate force, but the attack should not become too brash, and every effort should be made to maintain the cantabile quality of the music.
