Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #29: Takoyaki

Game #29 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is another simple card game that I had never actually played before, Takoyaki! In this game, players draw a card from the center pile. If it's between an Ace and a 10, they put it in the corresponding slot on their takoyaki-pan-shaped playing field and flip over the card in that slot. If it's another 1-10 slot that hasn't been filled yet, it goes in that slot and then that card gets turned and so on in this fashion until a card gets flipped that either has already been filled on the pan or is a face card. Then the other player does the same. The first player to fill all 10 slots with Ace through 10 wins.

Because this is a luck-based game, there are no adjustable difficulty settings for the CPU, so all you have to do is win once to master the game. Also, there is an option to put Jokers in the deck (which is a wild card and go in any unfilled slot on your playing field), and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Takoyaki:

1. Takoyaki, or octopus balls, are a Japanese street food commonly sold at stalls. Tiny bits of octopus are coated in wheat batter and cooled.
2. The batter is poured into a special cooking pan with round pockets. The cook uses a pick to stir and rotate the dough in order to form a ball.
3. The layout of the cards resembles a takoyaki pan, and the way the cards are flipped mimics the flipping of the batter. It might seem like a stretch, but there you go.
4. Strange but true: There's an asteroid called "Takoyaki".
