She fell with the empire and rose with the moon
Washed in the fire of a hellish monsoon
Long is the journey with no place to be
Vagabond on the Serengeti

The poachers were rabid like dogs in the dust
They reached out to stab it, in love with the lust
With devilish eyes and crocodile teeth
Waging war on the Serengeti

The packs were outrageous so she dug with the spade
Feeling courageous she drove home the blade
But a rogue pulled her under an Acacia tree
On the plains of the Serengeti

She eyed him with caution, she knew well his kind
She’d seen them quite often losing their mind
In the bowels of the earth, in the depths of the sea
Rolling hard on the Serengeti

He licked his own wounds and spoke not a word
Like a shepherd of doom in search of a herd
The wildebeest wept and intimately
Made love on the Serengeti

They flowed into the great migration machine
With the drumbeat fate of a Calvinist dream
Crossing the endless plains to the sea
Stretched out on the Serengeti

They hid in the bottom of a bottomless well
From the echoes of Sodom and the fire and hail
Where an African Queen from the 10th century
Slept under the Serengeti

A little man drinking rum was down there to plunder
He was armed with a gun but no sense of wonder
His satchel was full of priceless jewelry
A bold thief on the Serengeti

But the Queen of the Stone awoke from her nap
She rattled her bones and roared like a cat
She clawed out his eyes and left him to plead
For mercy on the Serengeti

The Maasai were marching beneath the full moon
While the woman was arching her back in the gloom
Of the well with no water, while the rogue tried to see
Her eyes like the Serengeti

Kibo was awoken by the Queen of the Stone
The glaciers were broken, the future was thrown
To the pride of the lion and the shameful greed
Of the men on the Serengeti

The plagues were unleashed – blood, locust and toad
The battle increased while she and her rogue
Wandered the tunnels for a path to the sea
And the Queen of the Serengeti

The man with no eyes bled in the bucket
A bottomless prize where the woman had stuck it
He clutched to his satchel and precariously
Climbed up to the Serengeti

The Maasai were there taunting the heads of their foes
Freakishly flaunting their corpses in rows
The man pulled his gun and fired recklessly
With no prayer on the Serengeti

Down by the Crater, they lingered a while
I will meet you later, she said with a smile
From Kilimanjaro there’s so much to see
Marauding the Serengeti

The rogue was all lathered, waiting for a shave
The poachers now gathered around a fresh grave
Waiting for someone or something to be
The next victim on the Serengeti

He staggered like a wino from the cut of the blade
The rage of the rhino so carefully played
A bright trail of blood marked the dark treachery
Of the Queen of the Serengeti

A marabou stork delivered the bad news
As she picked with her fork at her potjiekos stew
She knew it was coming, for nothing can be
Forever on the Serengeti

The hyenas howled a sarcastic dirge
No love was allowed to withstand the purge
She scooped up the jewels and swore there would be
Vengeance on the Serengeti
