Last week, the print edition of The Epoch Times had a cryptic word puzzle where the answer was a quote from Harriet Ann Jacobs.

I had no idea who Harriet was, so I did some research and wrote this song. There is some detail on this page:

For many years people assumed Harriet's story was a scandalous fiction written by the abolition movement, however, the 2004 biography by Jean Fagan Yellin confirms that Harriet was a real person and confirmed the content of her 1861 book (written as Linda Brent):

I thought this was a good song to write, given July 4 is tomorrow. I am reminded of how horrific life in America was for many people after the war of independence, and how much of that history still shapes the country.
