Street graffiti started out as a form of urban communication based on words and developed its own network. The early street graffiti writers did not succumb to the evaluation standards of the institutionalized art world, and they developed a new, independent art world based on their own standards. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, many graffiti writers began to shift from text graffiti to works that included images. This particular aesthetic, most commonly the use of bold colors, involves stylistic and abstract fonts known as "wild styles", as well as/or comic-like figures, which gradually develop into the widely accepted street art that is today.
