Who discusses , the impact of viewing idealised bodies in mass media has received a lot of attention in psychological research, including a recent surge of interest in the impact of social media However, relatively little research has examined the impact of idealised bodies in video games. Are idealised virtual bodies as potentially harmful? The interview discusses gaming and body image research, including Jenny’s own research exploring women gamers’ experiences of choosing their own avatars, and of playing with hypersexualised game characters.

Dr Jenny Cole is a senior lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, specialising in social psychology. She has interests in the social psychological consequences of how bodies, technology and gender interact. Recent research has focused on women’s experiences of the types of bodies seen and played as in video games, and the impacts of 3D body scanning on body image.
