Ketanji Brown Jackson sworn in as first Black female US Supreme Court justice

Ketanji Brown Jackson took her constitutional and statutory oaths on Thursday as she was sworn in as the first Black woman to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Her swearing-in comes at a contentious time for the nation's highest court, after it ruled on issues including climate change, gun control and the overturning of the Roe v. Wade decision on abortion. She also will sit on the court as an associate justice in the next term, as it is expected to face the issues of voting rights, affirmative action and LGBTQ2 rights.

Jackson was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts, with her reciting her constitutional oath, before having her statutory oath read before outgoing justice Stephen Breyer, whom she clerked for. Her appointment to the court will not change the ideological makeup, however, with only two other liberal justices sitting on the bench, compared with six conservative justices.
