Sunday Longplay - Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Scroll (NES ROM Hack)

This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm taking a break from Bloodstained and shifting to a ROM hack that I heard about a couple years ago that caught my eye but wasn't able to play until just a few months ago. This is a hack of Ninja Gaiden on the NES by pacnsacdave entitled "Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Scroll".

The entire Ninja Gaiden trilogy on NES is considered some of the hardest video games ever made. And this hack is no exception to that rule. In fact, the game itself basically tells you that you'd better have mastered the original game if you're going to play this, by throwing those vicious birds at you right away (while the original game waited until level 3 to throw those things at you), and having you fight the second of the three final bosses from the original game as the very first boss fight in this game. Plenty of precarious platforming, sneak attacks, and everything else that made the original Ninja Gaiden hard is back here, giving a fresh challenge to Ninja Gaiden masters without making it completely unfair (Ninja Gaiden In Hell, anyone?).

But what really makes this particular hack stick out is that it introduces a new player character. You still play as Ryu Hayabusa for most of the game, but a new challenger makes an appearance in a couple levels! I was hoping for a while now that somebody would make a Ninja Gaiden NES hack that incorporates the new player characters introduced in the Xbox/Playstation reboot trilogy into the classic NES style, and now we finally have an 8-bit rendition of the young purple-clad kuniochi Ayane! She only appears in two levels and one boss fight, but it's still a nice touch. Now we just need an 8-bit Rachel hack...
