SV Ramble On | Sewing a Canvas Binnacle Cover

We've learned a lot of new skills refitting this boat. Sewing canvas wasn't one we planned to tackle. We were more than happy to pay someone to satisfy all our canvas and sewing needs. But as often happens in life, things don't go according to plan.

Earlier this year we tried to hire a canvas maker to sew a few things for the boat. He was an utter failure at it. We searched around our area for other canvas shops, but just didn't have any luck. They were all so flaky; wouldn't return phone calls or just didn't seem interested.

So we bit the bullet and bought a Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ-1 Sewing Machine and their collapsible sewing table. My grandmother sewed her whole life and she was really excellent at it. She taught both my sister and I to sew. But that was literally over 30 years ago and I haven't sewed since. I guess there's no time like the present to learn.

Sailrite has a great YouTube Channel with all kinds of instructions. I picked the binnacle cover to do first because they have a kit you can buy and there's an hour-long video on exactly how to do it. Did it come out perfectly? No. But I think it looks pretty good. As with most things this boat, we live by the 10-foot rule. Meaning does it look good from 10 feet away. If so, we're happy.
