In the U.S. Declaration of Independence, the founding father of America wrote "All men are created equal.” Not today. For 50 years, women in the U.S. had a choice over their reproductive rights, but their right to a legal, safe abortion has now been taken away. The overturning of Roe v. Wade didn’t happen overnight — it was decades in the making, with the stacking of conservative justices. Jackson Proskow has more from the Supreme Court on this historic day.
As Canadians watched the news unfold south of its border, many are wondering if they would follow suit. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promises that isn’t going to happen. But as Abigail Bimman reports, there are fears that abortion access here could become limited if an influx of Americans seek care at Canadian clinics.
The public inquiry into the Nova Scotia mass shooting says the federal government left out critical pages of a senior RCMP’s notes while they were given the file. The Mass Casualty Commission says it wasn’t until it received a second package weeks ago that four crucial pages were included. Mercedes Stephenson has the details.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau continued his trip to Rwanda where the Commonwealth Heads of Government summit officially opened today. Global News chief political correspondent David Akin is traveling with the PM whose looking to build relationships with some of the commonwealth’s smaller nations and sway others to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
For weeks, Ukrainian forces have fought to hold onto a besieged eastern city, but now Kyiv has ordered its troops to withdraw from Sievierodonetsk. The retreat is a significant victory for Russia as it aims to gain control of the entire Donbas region. Redmond Shannon reports.
In Ukraine, the school year was cut short when Russia invaded in February. And as Global’s Sean O’Shea reports, the combination of the war and the pandemic have made for a terrible school year.
After two long years, Toronto’s Pride parade is once again taking to the streets. Pride Toronto estimates that nearly two million people are going to be out for this weekend’s celebrations, a welcome change for both participants and businesses in the city. Mike Drolet reports.
