Did you know that prior to 1956, Edgemore Hospital operated the only volunteer firefighting unit for the entire Santee area? Out of the 10,000 people that had lived there, only 6 firefighters were available for the entire district!

Now that the city of Santee has grown exponentially, Santee Fire Station 5 is housed at the southern tip of Santee Lakes off of Carlton Oaks Drive. The lakes provide a scenic area for the firemen and women to host events for the community like breakfast socials and even some annual fishing derbys for all to enjoy.

The area we know as Santee Lakes today actually used to be an empty mining spot that Bill Mast had owned. But, as Santee continued to grow in the early into the late 1950’s, so did the use of electricity, water, and sewage. The neighboring City of San Diego was too expensive to pipeline and treat water that would eventually head west about 18 miles into the Pacific Ocean.

Instead a man named Ray Stoyer, had a novel idea for his time. Stoyer, the Santee County Water District’s general manager, had a plan that would treat, collect, and recycle used water. This plan was much more environmentally friendly and would also offset the demand they had for imported water.

The reason this plan came to fruition was because Bill Mast had already mined a large area down to gravel and clay, and he was willing to donate this land if they would just route some of this newly recycled water to his new country club. So in 1959 the Padre Municipal Water District was established and they began construction of this idea that was really decades ahead of them.

Although Stoyer wanted to open the area as a recreational center for all to enjoy, his water filtration was not as perfected as the Department of Health would have liked it. So he took the next couple years to construct further percolation and filtration of the water. Finally, in 1962 they were finally able to have a grand opening for all to enjoy. He had relandscaped the area with trees, a variety of plants, picnic tables, and it had attracted over 10,000 people to celebrate the opening that day.

Overtime, a total of six lakes reached the equivalent of natural freshwater lakes, and it has become the Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve that we know of today.

The 190 acre park is now stocked with fish year round, and hosts over 750,000 guests annually. On the northernmost lake there are cabin rentals and RV/tent camping spots available for all to enjoy. It has paved ways for visitors to enjoy walks and/or bike rides. Landscaped with tons of grass for picnics and plenty of jungle gyms and spray grounds for kids to cool down in the heat of summer.

The area also has a ton of natural wildlife, including over 200 species of bird that habitat the area. There are also plenty of spots to fish, and boats to rent if you want to drop your lure in the middle of the lake. Or take a paddle boat around to coast through the calm and clean water.

The Ray Stoyer Water Reclamation Facility just north of Santee lakes now recycles over 2 million gallons of recycled water every day. As the water journeys down each lake, over 50% of it is re-used to feed the golf course, city parks, and so much more. The ingenuity to reduce, re-use, and recycle water has really paid off for the city of Santee.
Aesthetically, the lakes provide amazing views from neighborhoods that lie on the east and western sides of the lake. The Mast bridge also provides quite the view from the car as well.

On the west side, the Weston Prism Neighborhood is starting to take shape on the banks. The 3-5 bedroom homes on 1700 plus square feet provide the farmhouse and contemporary feel starting at the mid 500,000’s. Even behind that development there are tons of hiking and mountain bike trails with even more amazing views and wildlife for all to enjoy.
