Houston police shot and injured a man early Wednesday who opened fire while officers were investigating a report that he was trying to kill himself, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched to the 4500 block of Warm Springs around 2:35 a.m. on a wellness check and began investigating the outside of the residence while waiting for back up, Houston Police Department Asst. Chief Ban Tien said. The man earlier told 911 calltakers that he wanted to kill himself, police said.

While outside the residence, the man's wife arrived and officers began interviewing her when they heard gunshots come from inside the residence, Tien added. As additional officers arrived to the location, the man opened up the garage door and began firing multiple rounds.

"Only one officer discharged at this time," he said. "The male who was involved received medical attention and was transported to a local hospital."

The man is in stable condition, according to Tien. He was the only one inside the residence during the incident.

An internal investigation into the shooting will take place and the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave with all body camera footage being released within 30 days, authorities added.

The officer who shot the man has been at the agency for two years, Tien said.
