First King Salmon Of 2020 Michigan Fishing / Night Fishing For Chinook Salmon
In this video Im doing some Michigan salmon fishing with my buddy Jason Marr. We went out fishing for our favorite fish to fish for together, The Mighty King Salmon! This was the first night of a 4 day salmon fishing trip up north. I managed to land my first king salmon of 2020 on the first night. this was our first time drifting spawn bags for salmon and it quickly proved more productive than casting lures. neither of us had a proper salmon fishing rod but we got r done with our 6'6" and 7ft Abu Garcia rods. we may have lost too many fish as a result but fighting big king salmon on a small meduim action rod is so much fun! The fall salmon run is something I look forward to all year round and when it gets her I go fishing like a mad man just for a chance of a fight with a big powerfull salmon.
For more King Salmon Fishing Michigan action be sure to subscribe! I have several salmon fishing videos comming out soon. Weather you are fishing The Muskegon river or the Pere Marquette River or the Manistee River or the Betsie river or the Grand River. There are kings waiting to try to spool you so go get em!
The Chinook salmon /ʃɪˈnʊk/ (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) is the largest species of Pacific salmon as well as the largest in the genus Oncorhynchus. Its common name is derived from the Chinookan peoples. Other vernacular names for the species include king salmon, Quinnat salmon, spring salmon, chrome hog, and Tyee salmon. The scientific species name is based on the Russian common name chavycha (чавыча).
Freshwater salmon were introduced into the Great Lake system as early as the late 1800’s. The main types are Chinook, Coho, Pinks, Kokanee (Sockeye), and two strains of Atlantic salmon.
chinook great lakesChinook: Chinook were introduced in the 1870’s, but they eventually disappeared. In 1966 there was a collective effort from Michigan, New York, Wisconsin and Ontario to reintroduce them. Chinook males generally live for 1-2 years and females from 3-4 years. The mature females are obviously larger. Unlike Chinook in the Pacific Ocean, land locked Chinook stay in water less than 100 feet generally. Pacific Chinook can often be found from 100-200 feet of water, unless they are following the route they took as a smolt. Chinook in the Great Lakes take longer to mature than ocean run Chinook, mostly because of feed sources.
In most rivers Chinook (Kings) start making their way up during late August and early September. By early October most Chinook have turned very dark and the run is almost at its end. This is similar to the spawning habits of Chinook on many parts of the west coast of North America.
Reel Michigan Anglers is a personal passion and my gift to fellow fisherman. In the future I hope to do more informational fishing videos and cover different types of fishing all across the great state of Michigan. My goal, time permitting is to fish as many different bodies of water for as many different fish species as I can get try hands on. I am a lansing michigan resident working towards transferring to MSU for Fisheries and wildlife. My goal is to expand operations and bring more educational and entertaining fishing videos to my subscribers. In the meantime you can count on me for the occasional video outlining the the techniques and areas I fish for Bass, Pike, Walleye, Steelhead, Salmon, Trout, Carp, Suckers, Catfish and Panfish ect. You can see additional videos and other fun fishing related info on my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?... I Wouldn't be the fisherman I am today without other fisherman who taught me the things I know and I am a firm believer that the sport and conservation of fishing in Michigan is better when we share it with one another. Wether your trying to lean a new spot to fish, a new crank bait to try, advise on what fishing rod to use, what fishing line to use, what color spinner a coho likes, what color jig a steelhead prefers, how to rig live bait, match the hatch, understand fish migration, the effects of barometric pressure or any other aspect of fishing the best way to learn is from other fisherman. That combined with trial and error and pure time spent on the water is the key to improving your fishing game. The better you get the more fun it is and the more we share the fun with others the more future generations will benefit from it.
